Everyone has had a rash at one time or another in their life. A rash is a nonspecific medical term that refers to any swelling or discoloration of the skin. There are many common types of rashes, and most can be treated in a walk-in clinic like the My InstaDoc clinic in Howell. These are eight common rashes that can be treated by our providers.

Atopic Dermatitis

The common name for atopic dermatitis is eczema, and it is a very common skin disorder especially found in childhood. The rash is often found on the elbows, on the checks or neck, and on the wrists and ankles.

Contact Dermatitis

This rash appears after coming into contact with something that sparks an allergic reaction. The most common types of contact dermatitis are poison ivy and poison oak. The rash is localized, and it can be very red and even ooze. Diaper rash is a type of contact dermatitis for babies.

Psoriasis

This rash is often found on the elbows, knees, or even the scalp. The skin does not ooze, but it does flake and falls off. It looks somewhat scaly or bumpy.

Miliaria

Miliaria is a scary sounding name for a very simple rash: heat rash. Hot and humid weather can cause a cluster of small, red blisters. It is commonly found on babies and is usually seen on the neck, upper chest, elbow creases, and groin.

Drug Side Effects

Antibiotics and other drugs can cause a skin rash in some people. The rashes caused by drug allergies have a wide variety of looks. The physician at the walk-in clinic will need an accurate list of your current medication and any other medications you have taken to be able to determine the cause.

Seborrheic Dermatitis

This is the most common rash seen on adults, and it is a red, scaly, and itchy rash that is often found on the scalp, external ears, and cheeks. In babies, it is often referred to as cradle cap.

Stasis Dermatitis

This rash develops on the legs of people that suffer from chronic swelling due to poor circulation. The rash is very weepy or oozy.

Hives

This rash usually comes on suddenly and disappears within eight hours. Hives are itchy red bumps that can form on any part of the body. It is generally not necessary to seek medical attention at the walk-in clinic for hives as they tend to dissipate on their own.
