If you plan to undergo bariatric surgery, you need to consider your options. It is important to consult your doctor about what type of procedure offers the most effective method for you to lose weight. For some, the optimal method is gastric sleeve surgery. It offers several benefits for those who qualify for it.

Description of the Procedure and the Results

This procedure also called a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), is less invasive than other forms of weight loss surgeries. This permanent solution to losing weight involves two major components:

1. The removal of approximately 75% of the stomach
2. The formation of a new tube-like stomach with the remaining 25%

The new stomach cannot retain as much food as the original one. The process of stomach reduction also decreases the production of ghrelin – a hormone that regulates the appetite. These two factors combine to result in appetite reduction and weight loss. At the same time, it does not negatively impact the ability of the intestines to absorb both nutrients and calories.

Gastric sleeve surgery is irreversible. It also requires less follow-up visits compared to lap band surgery. This is partially because the process does not leave a foreign entity – a band or a balloon, in the body. It does not mean, however, that you will not require doctor visits to ensure the procedure remains successful. Moreover, you must work on various aspects of your life to ensure the weight remains off. This includes talking to a nutritionist about changing your lifestyle to embrace regular exercise and healthy eating habits.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Medical professionals often refer to this surgery as a “set and forget” procedure. Gastric sleeve surgery reduces the actual size of your stomach close to its original proportions. This results in the reduction of both short and long-term hunger. However, it is very important to adjust your dietary habits, or you could end up with the same problem in the future.
