There are various fragrance books available in places as different as Eugene OR and Paris, France. Many of today’s writings either look closely at the industry or are instructive. Others consider the contribution of perfumers.

Five Early Notable Perfumers

Throughout history, men and women have contributed to the making of perfume. The lengthy list begins with Tapputi-Belatekallim from 1200BCE Mesopotamia and stretches into the current date with Francis Kurdjian (1969-) currently of the House of Dior. Below is a truncated list of notable perfumers who have made the pages of fragrance books.

  1. Henri Alméras (1892-1965): A French perfumer, his most famous creation was Joy (1929)
  2. Ernest Beaux (1881-1961): He gained accolades in the industry. His major success was the creation of Chanel Number 5.
  3. François Coty (1874-1934): The founder of the Coty cosmetic empire, this Corsican was responsible for several notable scents. However, the most successful was Chypre (1917)
  4. Ernest Daltroff (1867-1941): This founder of Parfums Caron (1904) created Narcisse Noir (1911) and the first leather-dominated fragrance called Tabac Blonde (1919).
  5. Giovanni Paolo Feminis (1660-1736?): A healer with a great nose, he created the first version of Aqua Mirabilis in around 1727. It later became a popular scent
  6. Jacques Guerlain (1874 –1963): He founded Guerlain and created the famous fragrance Shalimar (1925) – the first oriental fragrance in modern history
