Five Early Notable Perfumers
Throughout history, men and women have contributed to the making of perfume. The lengthy list begins with Tapputi-Belatekallim from 1200BCE Mesopotamia and stretches into the current date with Francis Kurdjian (1969-) currently of the House of Dior. Below is a truncated list of notable perfumers who have made the pages of fragrance books.
- Henri Alméras (1892-1965): A French perfumer, his most famous creation was Joy (1929)
- Ernest Beaux (1881-1961): He gained accolades in the industry. His major success was the creation of Chanel Number 5.
- François Coty (1874-1934): The founder of the Coty cosmetic empire, this Corsican was responsible for several notable scents. However, the most successful was Chypre (1917)
- Ernest Daltroff (1867-1941): This founder of Parfums Caron (1904) created Narcisse Noir (1911) and the first leather-dominated fragrance called Tabac Blonde (1919).
- Giovanni Paolo Feminis (1660-1736?): A healer with a great nose, he created the first version of Aqua Mirabilis in around 1727. It later became a popular scent
- Jacques Guerlain (1874 –1963): He founded Guerlain and created the famous fragrance Shalimar (1925) – the first oriental fragrance in modern history
