There are a lot of very costly workbenches out there that use T track to provide continual options for clamping and securing items along the edges and even down the sides and ends of the work area.
To save money, it isn’t difficult to construct your own bench using T track aluminum. Choosing a standard size or a universal size is the most effective as this gives you greater options when choosing clamps and other devices to use with the table that are standard fit for the T-slot.
Attaching the T Track
There are three options in mounting or positioning the T track aluminum to an existing workbench or table surface. The easiest option is the surface mount. For this option simply position the t track where required and fasten it in place with the appropriately sized screws. You may want to choose a screw that mounts flush regardless of the position of the track as this will allow the bolts to slide smoothly and easily along the track.
To have the track inset into the table, you will need to cut a groove in the table with a router that is the exact outside measurement of the track. The track is then dropped into the slot and groove and fastened in place.
Another option is to use the surface mount and then slide ½ inch boards, or other sizes if you are using other than universal T track to either side of the track, turning the surface mount into the flush mount easily and without the need for the router.
Ideas and Positions
T track aluminum on the edges of the table or at the ends is a great option when you will need to clamp large or small items in place. This allows you to hold boards or other items with the clamps and cut easily away from the table or bench.
For table saw mounted in the workbench area, the T track can be placed as needed to form custom jigs. This not only makes repeating a specific cut perfect every time, but it also provides the user with increased safety as the jig itself can be clamped in place during the cutting process.
This type of T channel can be used in the same ways on all types of tools and devices in the shop. It is perfect for making a fence for your router that can move back and forth as well as left and right for perfect positioning every time.
