There are a number of dental procedures that fall into the category of oral surgery, perhaps the most common are the extraction of wisdom teeth and root canals.

Prior to surgery oral surgeons in Wilmington NC will first meet with the patient to discuss what options there may or may not be. Prior to performing the procedure the surgeon will have first reviewed any and all preliminary work that has been done, this normally includes a review of the X-Rays that have been taken. The surgeon will discuss any pre-surgery issues that include the need for fasting for a certain number of hours prior to the surgery and ensuring that the patient has someone with them to get them home, this is especially important if the patient is going to be subjected to anesthesia.

Wisdom teeth extraction:

Perhaps the most common oral surgery is the removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth, considered to be the “third” set of molars often are misaligned or positioned in such a fashion that they fail to cut through the gum properly, they also are frequently impacted. These anomalies are what lead to pain and excessive swelling; the solution is to simply have oral surgeons in Wilmington NC extract them. Once these teeth are extracted the patient feels no further pain and in many cases it prevents infection and decay in teeth which are in close proximity to the affected wisdom tooth.

Although wisdom teeth are the usual candidate for surgical extraction teeth which are infected or severely damaged represent other times when extraction is the best option. In cases such as this the oral surgeon will often suggest that a dental implant procedure be undertaken at the site of the extraction, this eliminates the possibility of adjacent teeth moving to fill the void which is a leading cause of tooth misalignment.

Root canal:

Rather than extract teeth which are badly decayed or abscessed oral surgeons in Wilmington NC will often perform a root canal. During a root canal procedure the surgeon removes some or all of the soft tissue that is found in the core of a tooth, the nerves are also removed at the same time as is any infection. By performing a root canal there is no need to remove the offending tooth although once the root canal is finished what remains of the tooth will have to be capped to close the rather large hole that was made to allow the surgeon to access the inside of the tooth.
