Although they are nothing new, fluorescent bulbs are still popular fixtures in business and homes today. In fact, this type of lighting provides a number of benefits and should not be overlooked when considering lighting options. Here are some important things to know before you install new lights.

How Do Fluorescent Lights Work?

Standard lighting has been with us for more than a century and it works on a simple principle. Electric current passing through an element creates light. However, at the same time a great deal of heat is also generated and this is not the most efficient way to provide lighting. Around 80 years ago, fluorescent technology came into being. Instead of using an element, these lights utilized gas inside of a tube. The gas burns slower and more efficiently than standard light bulbs. A high voltage current is used, which is created by a special transformer.

Good Things about Fluorescent Light

  • Energy efficiency – when compared to incandescent light, fluorescent can save more than 60 percent on electricity. In other words, the same amount of light from fluorescent bulbs will cost you as much as 60 percent less than standard light.
  • Maintenance – if you are not thrilled about paying someone to routinely replace all the burned out bulbs in your business, you will appreciate the longevity of fluorescent lighting. These bulbs last for many more hours than their standard counter parts.
  • Easier on cooling – because fluorescent is much cooler than incandescent bulbs you may save a lot on your cooling bills. This is especially true if you are lighting a very large facility.
  • Simple to install – for many home and office applications you can buy special fluorescent bulbs which screw into standard sockets. This will give you all the added benefits with additional expenses for installation.

Downside to Fluorescent Lighting

When changing over to fluorescent from incandescent light, you may have a significant installation cost. However, it can be recouped over time thanks to the energy savings and maintenance benefits. Here are some additional downsides:

  • You may need to hire an experienced electrician or lighting professional to get the most from your fluorescent light. This ensures everything is safely and properly installed.
  • As some fluorescent bulbs age they may begin to flicker when it is time for replacement.
  • Aesthetics – some believe fluorescent light is cold and impersonal looking, but this depends on the type of fixtures and bulbs you choose.

Fluorescent light can provide all the light you need and at a substantial savings over standard options. Plus, with so many choices today, there is no need to worry about appearance.
