For one thing, sedation dentistry can be a godsend to people who are afraid of going to the dentist. People who fear going to the dentist because of the pain and discomfort can have dental procedures done while they sit and relax. It can also help with children who are uncooperative or are simply unable to sit still.

What About the Safety of Sedation Dentistry?

When administered by an experienced dentist, sedation is usually very safe. As with any anesthesia, there are always risks. You should ask your dentist about his experience with sedation, and of course, the more experience the better. Your dentist should go over all the risks with you and should ask about any medications you are taking; either prescribed or over the counter. Those who are obese or have sleep apnea should check with their doctor before undergoing sedation.

Ask about emergency procedures should there be a problem. Your dentist should have oxygen available on site and medication to reverse the sedation.

Can Any Dentist Perform Sedation?

Nearly any dentist can offer sedation dentistry through the use of nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) or pills for minimal sedation. In most states, for dentists to administer moderate sedation they must obtain a permit or license from the state where they practice.

Only a very small percentage of dentists are certified to perform deep sedation and general anesthesia. To offer this service, the dentist must complete the Commission on Dental Accreditation program covering general anesthesia and deep sedation. Some dentists will hire a dental anesthesiologist who has special training in all types of sedation.
