It’s recommended to visit your dentist Glen Rock once every six months to achieve good oral health. Your dentist can also help diagnose and treat oral health problems and also show you ways to prevent future problems.  But what if you don’t have a regular dentist you see?  Where is the first place you look to find one?  Probably the phone book or online, right?  Well those are helpful places to look, but it may be a good idea to ask around to friends and family members to see if they can recommend anyone. A lot of people have dentist they know and trust and  It’s best to go to someone that you will feel comfortable with and someone that comes with good recommendations.

At your check up visit, the dental hygienist will take x-rays of your teeth.  This will help diagnose any problems that may be going on inside your mouth such as cavities or gum disease. The hygienist then will use specific tools to help clean your teeth.  These tools are made to remove plaque and tarter more effectively than a toothbrush.  The dental assistant or hygienist may also show you how to floss correctly.  It’s important to floss because food can become stuck in between teeth causing decay. You may also be given fluoride to rinse with.  This helps strengthen your teeth and prevent tooth decay.

Sometimes people who need work done on their teeth may have anxiety about it. A trip to the dentist isn’t exactly how we want to spend our day, but sometimes it is necessary. If that tooth with a cavity goes untreated, it can cause a lot of pain for you down the road and you may eventually even need a root canal.  So it’s best to take care of the small problems before they become bigger.  When you go in for the procedure, you will be given a shot of Novocain to numb the area the dentist needs to work on.  If you have anxiety about this, you can ask if the dentist has anything to calm you down.  Sometimes they have nitrous oxide available to help calm nervous patients.  Once the Novocain is administered, you will not feel any pain while the dentist goes to work on your tooth.  When he’s done, you will realize it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be.

It’s best to prevent oral problems in the first place by taking good care of your teeth. Brush and floss regularly and avoid sugary foods.  If you end up getting some tooth pain, make sure to see your dentist Glen Rock right away before it gets worse.
