The words “kids leotards” may summon a variety of mental images, from gymnastics to ballet. But while the leotard is used in both dancing and sports, the problem of finding the right one for your child can seem daunting. Most children enjoy comfort over fashion, and we rarely associate leotards with “comfort,” but a few simple tips can ensure that your kid enjoys their outfit as much as they enjoy the activity they are performing.

Ask Your Coach

Since kids leotards are used for so many different types of activities, one of the best ways to find one that suits your child’s particular needs is to talk it over with their coach or trainer. Most coaches have worked with other children before and know exactly what works for them and what doesn’t, because they have dealt with the frustrations second-hand. A good coach can also let you know about any guidelines or rules that the child’s leotard must follow.

Consider Buying Multiple Styles

At a minimum, you will need to buy at least two different types of leotards: a performance leotard and a practice leotard. These may be made out of entirely different materials and may be entirely different styles of leotards.

But beyond those two simple styles, you may wish to purchase other styles to ensure that your child has the right leotard for every occasion. Young dancers may want both a long sleeve leotard and a camisole leotard, but they may also need a classic tank leotard.

Buying multiple styles ensures that your child always has the right style for the occasion and that they are always comfortable.

Fit is Very Important

If you purchase kids leotards that do not fit correctly, it could completely destroy your child’s performance. If the sleeves are too big, they will not have the freedom to move around in the right way. If the costume is too tight, they may not be able to perform their gymnastics correctly.

Consult with a size chart or a size expert if needed, because having the right size leotards can make or break your child’s entire performance.
